3D Texturing

Learning Log

Texture assignment is to texture scene given to us. I first started unwrapping the body of the main character in the scene. I decided from the get go that i would keep it very cartoon based. I’m not good with realism, perhaps in the future i’ll attempt to dive into that side of texturing but for now all I require is simple textures that i know i can achieve in my cartoon style. Many of these textures have been produced on Mud-box or Photoshop with the help of my trusty  Wacom tablet. Makes my workflow much easier than just using the standard computer mouse.  The first few images that i will be showing are of my little guy that i had to texture.

Body:

These two images above represent the torso of the figure. Top image is a representation of a successfully unwrapped and painted on Mud-box object. As you might notice the character seems to have been :”Through the wars”. Decided to keep it interesting and paint him like he’s either been in a battle or has just recently been attacked by another human or a wild animal. In Mud-box i started with a dark brown and created a circle and slowly added different tones of red to add depth to the piece. In some of the wounds it looks almost 3D in terms of the blood details. He has two giant tears on his chest with one tear having visible sighting of his rib-cage. “Nasty and Gorey” terms I’ve heard from fellow classmates and outside viewers when i show them the piece so far. This helps me know that I’ve succeeded in creating something that’s not just dark but mainly Gorey.

Unwrapping his body was a little challenging but i was referencing off of a previous assignment. I will put inmonster a snapshot of that in. Basically had to unwrap a large creature but it had its own set of challenges. But those lessons learnt by doing the previous assignment just made unwrapping of his torso. It took around two attempts before i managed to get the UV Unwraps as shown above to look the correct way that they do before I could Paint them.

The next body part that was added to this character was his pants/ legs. The unwrapping for this was painful. It took me around 1/2 the lesson to just be able to unwrap them because they were hollow which just confused me. However after spending forever on them I learnt to just trust my gut because I apparently had it done correctly but just had no confidence in my unwrapping ability.

pants-screen-shotpants-uv

The images above are both the final product of the eventual successful pants and the UV Unwraps of them. To continue the theme of the person being attacked i added various rips to his jeans with the added touch of blood just to continue the gore effect the piece had over all.  Added a lot of blood patches to the jeans just to show how badly he would be bleeding also made on Mud-box with the same technique as the torso. Some of the rips so bad you can visibly see the guy’s knee with also a bad injury on it as well with the knee cap showing.

Once the torso and pants were painted and texture was added and the person started to look good i moved onto his hands and feet. Both had the same level of difficulty as the pants. Also took the same amount of time and effort to get them correct. For the hands i had a year 2 or 3 help me figure it out.

The hands are currently not textured because last week on the 2nd of December i decided all my images were all over the place so i put them in an organization but max isn’t too happy with me now that its all in one place so i’m having to re do some of the textures. Just a little set back but ill work through it. The feet have their texture and it’s the same theme as the rest. “where are his shoes” you may ask well i’m just going to assume if your attacked you wouldn’t have shoes so my character is barefoot. Not as wounded on his feet as the rest of his body because there wasn’t a need. I wanted him to be wounded but to not look like a rotting zombie. He’s still alive. I don’t know how with all the blood lost and open wounds but he is. Not a zombie just a poor unfortunate soul.  All the UV’s look correct even though the hands look a little weird I’ve been assured that’s what they are supposed to look like.

Once the body was complete with it’s essentials minus his head and his eyeballs. I haven’t unwrapped his head yet. I worked and textured his beard and hair. When It came down to his hair, I’ve basically given the poor soul a Donald Trump hair style and color. Wasn’t aiming for that but its the best way to describe the outcome.

(Just screenshots of the UV unwrap of the beard and the hair and beard final textures). Hair looks a bit like macaroni and  cheese in Donald Trumps hair with a swamp looking beard. The beard looks alright because he’s been in the wars he’s not supposed to look clean and perfect. Both beard and hair unwrapped and textured on 11/11/2016 or 18/11/2016 lesson.

Eyes: Done 9/12/2016

Left eye is blood shot from previous fight and right eye had been replaced years back with a grey material. He’s been through more than one wars. Wrong place at the wrong time.

 Landscape:

This is the landscape part of the assignment, for example the rocks, sea and the ground.

I kept the ground and sea texture very simple. Both were created first and on Photoshop. I carefully added the shade to mark out where the shade from the buildings would come of in the rendering of the final completed piece. I also added a rough patch to really highlight where the rocks sit on the piece.

(Sea/ Rocks & Land screenshots and textures taken from my Photoshop files) Everything sticks with my cartoon type style.  unwrapped and textured on 11/11/2016 or 18/11/2016 lesson.

Grass: The grass was a 5- 10  minutes because i wasn’t sure how i wanted to go about it. Overall i think i went very basic but it compliments the ground texture for the assignment

Logs:

The logs were done around the same time as the rocks and the sword. The log wasn’t too difficult to unwrap but yet wasn’t super easy. But overall it turned out all right. The texture came from making a random wood like design on Photoshop.

Weapons & Chest :

As well as the landscape and the person he also has various weapons and a chest that i have yet to unwrap. It looks difficult so i have left it but will get round to it eventually.

The first weapon is his sword. I created the texture for this on Mud- box after i had finished unwrapping it.

sword-screenshotsword-texturesword-uv

The sword has blood on it to keep the bloody gory theme going. Also if he was attacked I’m sure he would of used this sword to defend himself. I kept a simple texture. It over all  to me looked like it was in a sword cover but it works as if it was or wasn’t hence the obscure color. But i like the shade of blue i added because it’s a nice contrast over all to the final product. I managed to unwrap the sword pretty easily even though I’m not currently 100% sure its correct but it came out okay on Mud-box and when i placed the texture onto it.

The Box was next and I was worried about unwrapping it but I tried my best and it turned out alright overall.  Wasn’t  that much texture added to it over all because it’s just a bow. A bow with no arrows to be seen may i add. A bit weird.

The bow has a very simple design as mentioned previously.  Bow and sword were unwrapped and textured on 2/12/2016 lesson.

The chest hasn’t been started but here is a screenshot of the chest that i eventually have to attempt to unwrap and texture.

The chest was hard to unwrap with all it’s little pieces. The easiest were the straps and handles on the side. The sides of the chest and the top were a little bit more challenging but turned out alright. The actual chest itself was hard to unwrap, no matter which peel lines i chose to go up or down it just didn’t turn out right. Once I had decent peels i put it into Mud box and it seemed to look alright and even once i painted it, it also looked pretty decent.

The next four pictures show’s the work i did on the chest in Mud Box.

I started off with a gold for the handles and the straps as well as putting the base coat of light and dark brown. To give the chest it’s final look i used a wood grain stencil in Mud Box to give the final effect of a wooden chest.

Shield:

The shield was pretty simple to unwrap. I failed in the painting side of things because I forgot which side gets shown. I worked a lot of detail into the front but i suppose it’s fine because if anyone viewed this piece from all angles then they would see the whole piece. Even though i had that mishap I really do like how it turned out overall.

With the front of the shield even though you can’t see it. I wanted to create a version of Link’s Shield. Just because I like that shield. I also had the idea that he could of seen the shield somewhere and wanted to recreate it. Like I said even though it’s not seen i still think the effort i put into the shield is great.

Building One-

I started on the building on the right. First i unwrapped and painted the door. Following the theme of this piece and it’s gore aspect the door is covered in moss and blood stains. Something sinister clearly went on in front or behind that door. It’s absolutely gruesome.

As clearly seen in the pictures above that the stone door is gross. Overall I’m quite happy with the turn out.

Next was the actual building. For me this was hard to unwrap, it took a lot of trial and error until i got the right peel, or the right peel i believe, it turned out alright in Mud Box, no problems so i’m assuming that it’s an alright unwrap.  Door frame was next, it was once again tricky but I completed it to the best of my ability.

The roof was also  complex and i unwrapped it to the best of my ability. I was going to create another texture perhaps a golden wood color but i decided against it because I wanted this building to follow the stone theme.

Building Two:

Another stone old building theme. This building has clearly shown the test of time with the amount of moss and other green creatures who have made that building it’s home. second-building-texture

This building is not unwrapped because I tried and wasn’t able to unwrap it. But my texture already fit’s it nicely so it’s not awful. I really love this texture i created. It was originally for my rocks in the scene but i ended up not liking the overall look and thought to place it on this particular building and it was a great fit. Also runs really well with the rest of the environment.

Finished Scene

I’ve finally finished all the work needed for this assignment.

Summary of textures:

Overall when it came to texturing it was quite enjoyable compared to my modeling assignment. However, the unwrapping a lot of the pieces were quite difficult and challenging but i managed to get a lot of the unwrapping done. Some pieces just looked better without the unwrapping such as the building above. This assignment had it’s challenges but overall i think it turned out pretty decent for my first time in texturing.

I gave the theme of a zombie apocalypse hence why my character is covered in cuts and bruises and why there is blood EVERYWHERE!. I think this added to the character of the piece. The art style i have Is very inspired by Insomniac Game’s ratchet and clank. They’ve inspired my aspiration to be an animator and texture artist.  Very simple textures but have added a lot of character to the piece which helps because I didn’t want the piece to look too busy or have colors clash. The simple textures in the background really help make the guy in pop and stand out as he is the main focus of this animation and the assignment.

Overall very happy with how this turned out. It’s assured my love and passion for texturing and digital painting.
